Understanding South Asia

Privacy

Last updated 4 November 2026

Reading the atlas needs no account. It shows no ads, sets no tracking cookies and sells nothing about anyone. If you sign in, your name and email stay in your own browser. If you ask a question, it is sent to Anthropic so that Claude can write the answer.

Reading the atlas

Every page can be read without signing in, except the Names and Surnames chapters. The site is served by Cloudflare. Like any web host, Cloudflare handles the address your browser connects from and similar request details in order to deliver pages and keep the site secure. It also counts visits with Cloudflare Web Analytics, which sets no cookies and does not follow you to other sites. See Cloudflare's privacy policy.

What stays on your device

These stay in your browser and are never sent anywhere. Clearing this site's data in your browser removes them.

Signing in

The Names and Surnames chapters, and asking the atlas a question, need you to sign in with a Google account. Google then tells the atlas your email address and name. They are kept in a signed cookie in your browser for 30 days, so you stay signed in; the atlas does not store them anywhere else. Signing out deletes the cookie. Google's privacy policy applies to the sign-in itself.

Asking the atlas a question

Your question, together with the passages of the atlas chosen to answer it, is sent to Anthropic, whose model Claude writes the answer. Anthropic's privacy policy applies to that request. Please do not put personal details in a question.

To keep the service within its daily limits, the atlas counts how many questions each reader asks in a day. The count is filed under a one-way fingerprint of your email address, never the address itself, and is deleted after two days. Each answer is also kept for a day, filed under the wording of the question and not under who asked it, so that the same question asked again is answered without calling Claude a second time.

Changes

If what the atlas keeps changes, this page will say so, with a new date at the top.
